HAM-NKURIZA places a strong emphasis on strengthening capacity, mentorship, education, community engagement, and leadership development, ensuring viable sustainable change.

One of its core strategies involves the training of community health workers, educators, and “Maman Lumières”—trusted local women who serve as peer mentors in their neighborhoods. These key actors are equipped with essential knowledge and practical tools on:

• Child nutrition and hygiene

• Early detection of malnutrition

• Referral systems for medical and nutritional support

• Best practices in maternal and infant care

By empowering these local leaders, HAM-NKURIZA helps to create a ripple effect where families receive accurate health information and practical guidance right at the community level, thereby reducing preventable child illnesses and improving long-term health outcomes.

In addition to technical training, HAM-NKURIZA conducts a wide range of workshops and community dialogues under the broader Nkuriza Project, often in collaboration with national stakeholders and international partners such as the World Bank and RCBIF. These sessions focus on:

• Life skills for youth (e.g., decision-making, leadership, sexual health education)

• Relationship and parenting workshops for couples, promoting healthy families and positive child-rearing practices

• Gender-based violence prevention, child protection, and family communication

• Agricultural techniques and nutrition-sensitive farming for improved household food security

These interventions are tailored to the needs of each community and are delivered in accessible, participatory formats that encourage local ownership and dialogue. As a result, participants not only gain knowledge but also develop the confidence and motivation to act as change agents within their own families and neighborhoods.
